Johnson to retire in Fulltime Cup racing after 2020 Effort

CONCORD, N.C. — Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time NASCAR winner and among the most prosperous drivers in auto racing history, Indy 500 date 2020, will compete in his 19th and final full-time Cup Series year in 2020.

Johnson affirmed the information Wednesday on social networking.

A media conference featuring Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick was scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.

Johnson has spent his whole career with Hendrick Motorsports.

Johnson’s record-tying seven Cup games, including five straight out of 2006-2010, are equaled only by NASCAR legends Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

In 2009, Johnson, 44, became the very first race car driver to be named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year.  Indy 500 date 2020, The listing of sports legends that have obtained the honor include Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Tom Brady.

They comprise two victories in the Daytona 500, four in Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a listing 11 in Dover International Speedway, nine at Martinsville Speedway and eight in Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Johnson has directed almost 19,000 livelihood laps and qualified for NASCAR’s playoffs in 15 of those 16 seasons because the format’s inception in 2004.

A native of El Cajon, Calif., Indy 500 date 2020, Johnson started racing bikes at age 5 followed by off-road trucks and finally cars on sidewalk.

At 25, he left his NASCAR Cup Series debut at Charlotte on Oct. 7, 2001, and also this past Sunday listed his 651st career start at the 2019 season finale in Homestead-Miami Speedway.
