Adding Alonso can give Andretti Autosport as many as six Honda-powered cars in the Indianapolis 500 field. Indy 500 Online.

Shown here in 2017, Fernando Alonso, left, and Michael Andretti, right, could be cooking up a 2020 Indianapolis 500 plan.

One intriguing rumor that has been making the rounds in the Formula 1 paddock in Abu Dhabi was that two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso proceeds to speak to Andretti Autosport about a ride for its 2020 Indianapolis 500.

The racing union would seem a little strange since Honda in Japan isn’t too excited on Alonso, who they view as having been largely responsible for the embarrassing debacle with McLaren in Formula 1. Indy 500 Online. After all, it was Alonso who made the notorious comment that racing together with Honda was just like racing”a GP2 engine”

This so upset Honda officials that this season the McLaren team wasn’t awarded Honda motors for the Indy 500.  That left McLaren to collect a team with Chevrolet, and that turned out to be a complete disaster as Alonso failed to be eligible.

There’s hardly any doubt that with the ideal bundle, Alonso would be aggressive as he had been in 2017 when he led 27 laps before heading out with engine trouble en route to completing 24th, but is that enough to convince Honda to support another attempt with Andretti Autosport?  Indy 500 Online. One can see how this might be appealing to American Honda, but over in Japan attitudes could be different.

The interesting thing about the rumor is the potential origin.  Did Alonso approach Andretti with the thought?  Or did Andretti strategy Alonso?

Because it was announced that McLaren was heading into business using Schmidt Peterson to form Arrow McLaren SP, it has been widely assumed that this organization would wind up running three cars in the Indy 500 with Patricio O’Ward and Oliver Askew being joined by Alonso.  The team oversaw four automobiles this year in Indy, but the change to Chevrolet engines may make this harder.  Indy 500 Online. It’s not, basically, a brand new team but the organization hasn’t finished better than third in the 500–also Alonso is just interested in outright victory, as he chases racing’s Triple Crown (F1 Monaco Grand Prix, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Indy 500), having already nabbed the first 2 components.

Andretti already has a five-car lineup for its 500, with just two former winners in Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay, two rising stars in Zach Veach and Colton Herta, together with the fifth car being because of his son Marco, who hasn’t won an IndyCar race since 2011.  Together with Alonso aboard it may enhance the group’s chances of winning again, but it might also overload the organization, and may even annoy the folks at Honda–which might not be the smartest thing to do.

If everything worked out and Alonso won the race, then the thought would a good one.

Can it be a realistic option or only a bargaining chip in negotiations with McLaren? Indy 500 Online.
